NATCHITOCHES, La. – The spirit of giving was in full effect on the Northwestern State campus as the Demons’ athletic department partnered with the Natchitoches area Jaycees for its 24th annual Radio M*A*S*H (Make A Smile Happen) Toy Drive, Dec. 13-14.Led by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the NSU athletic department partnered with the Natchitoches-area Jaycees organization to collect toys and donations to disperse among families in need. The Radio M*A*S*H giveaway is a longstanding event that partners the Jaycees and Elite Broadcasting of Natchitoches, which launched the initiative in 1996, and is hosted in the parking lot of the local Walmart Super Store, a high-traffic area for local residents. For several years, NSU Athletics has provided more than 5,000 hours of community service, annually assisting local, area, national and international causes. This year marks the third-consecutive year that the Northwestern State athletic department has joined forces with the Jaycees organization for the Radio M*A*S*H event. This year, the Northwestern State SAAC gathered $754.12 within one day of collections in order to benefit 417 children and 210 families. The Lady Demons volleyball team led the way, gathering an impressive $344.57 as a team.“M*A*S*H has become a great opportunity for us athletes to get out into the community on a yearly basis,” said NSU SAAC president Megan Lohmiller. “One hundred percent of all monetary donations go directly to families in the Natchitoches community. It’s fun to give back during the season of giving.”As part of the “Southland Gives Back” initiative, the Southland Conference will profile a community service outing from each of our 13 member institutions this holiday season.
